Over this last year, I have been able to tour several of the new senior living communities in and around San Clemente. The quality of construction and modernized smaller space living can simplify life for an elderly person The community areas and apartments are much like a four-star resort hotel. Offering a life of less clutter and old memories to make way for a new fresh start. The amenities and activities offered are to also attract family members and other locals to enjoy themselves alongside the residents who are mostly widowed men and women with an average age of 80.
1 in 4 residents in the OC are over the age of 65
As Orange County's senior population grows, many families must weigh the benefits of senior living communities against aging at home. Senior living facilities in California provide amenities such as organized activities, medical support, and a sense of community, which can ease daily burdens and reduce isolation. On the other hand, aging at home allows seniors to remain in familiar surroundings, maintain independence, and stay close to family, though it may require additional in-home care and home modifications to ensure safety and comfort.
This aging demographic has brought both opportunities and challenges to our local area, especially for its aging residents. As neighborhoods have grown older with original housing dating back to the 1950’s, considerations around deferred maintenance, accessibility, transportation, and community resources become increasingly important for seniors who wish to remain in their aging homes. Recently I spent a few hours talking with some widowed women who are unable to maintain their home properly for health and safety standards. It was eye opening for me to visit their homes and talk with what their desires were. Simple things; a new roof, updated bathroom or kitchen, clearing of the property foliage. They wish to stay at home where everything is familiar. Too much change can become overwhelming. In home care is best for this senior which can be provided through Medicare/Medi-Cal health insurance.
For those who desire a new change or need assisted living at some level, there are so many options for residents over the age of 55. There are an estimated 80 senior living communities in and around San Clemente, CA. The options are:
• Assisted Living
• Independent Living
• Board and Care Homes
• 55+ Communities
• Memory Care Facilities
Assisted Living Placement Services in South Oorange County
Placement services offer personalized support to help families and seniors find the most suitable living arrangements based on individual needs, health requirements, and lifestyle preferences. By working closely with healthcare professionals and facility administrators, placement specialists can recommend options that provide both safety and comfort, making the transition into assisted living smoother and less stressful for everyone involved.
In addition to housing, the care that is provided to the residents is based upon a point system generally between 1-8. The cost of care is calculated upon the services needed by the residents. One-point costs $400 per month whereas eight points costs $5350 per month. Providing basic care for daily hygiene and meals can often cost several hundred dollars per month. The average cost is between $1500 - $4000 per month for needed care.
What can you do to prepare for your own aging plan?
Start by assessing your current health, financial situation, and housing options to determine what type of support you might need in the future. Research local senior living communities, care facilities, and placement services so you know what resources are available in your area and consider discussing your preferences with family members to ensure everyone is on the same page.
It’s wise to review your insurance policies and investigate long-term care coverage, as well as budget for potential care costs based on the point system used in many communities.
Organizing important documents, making necessary home modifications, and staying connected with healthcare providers will help set the foundation for a comfortable and secure transition into your later years.
The advantages of Obtaining Long-Term Care Insurance
This provides financial security for residents who may require varying levels of care as they age, supporting both low and high grade care needs without placing a significant financial burden on families. This type of coverage can help ensure that older adults, whether widowed or not, have access to the assistance they need from basic daily living support to more intensive medical care - while maintaining their independence and quality of life.
With Orange County’s aging population and a wide age range among residents, long-term care insurance offers peace of mind, knowing that costs for services, from minimal assistance to comprehensive care, can be managed through a structured point system that reflects individual needs. I always say, “Check the Long-Term disability box on your health insurance benefits,” it can be a real lifesaver if you have any long-term illness or disability arise.
