Take a bright, rectangular room, add a semi-circle of equipment, turn on some upbeat music, mix it with friendly, helpful instructors, and …. voila! The latest concept in women’s fitness programs, entitled – CURVES – has come to town.

According to Rebecca Lassen, owner of the newest CURVES in San Clemente, this program, designed especially for women, was conceived by a man, Gary Heavin. It seems Heavin became interested in women’s fitness when his mother died at a very young age, and it was from that experience that his desire to help women stay fit and healthy arose. After many years coaching and counseling in the fitness business, he developed a 30-minute workout for women, that he believed to be the most effective health and weight-loss program around.

Hydraulic resistance, strength-training machines form the basis of this circuit-training program. These machines allow clients to perform cardiovascular and strength training simultaneously. For 30 minutes exercisers move around the circuit, changing stations every 30 seconds as cued by a music tape.

There is no time frame scheduled for this exercise. When clients show up their workout begins. They jump in anywhere a station is open and move at the same time and in the same direction as everyone else. Each exerciser controls the intensity of their workout. And, like most exercise programs, it is suggested it be utilized at least three times per week for maximum results.

The recently opened San Clemente CURVES is owner Rebecca Lassen’s third in the South Orange County area. “I opened my first CURVES because a friend in the Midwest, who had continually resisted exercise in any form, called to tell me about the program,” Lassen recalls. “I figured if there was a program that could get her interested in exercise and nutrition, it must be good. So I investigated, and three studios later I find myself in San Clemente.”

This newest CURVES is presently offering a grand opening special.
