In the United States, it is customary to greet others with the polite inquiry, “How are you?” Typically, the response is delivered with enthusiasm: “Great!” Personally, I often reply, “I’m living the Dream," which, while lighthearted, genuinely reflects my perspective and often puts a smile on someone’s face.   Right here in San Clemente there are many reasons for living the dream life.

In early March, I had the opportunity to meet a group of senior service professionals united for a common purpose: addressing the needs of senior citizens in South Orange County. The Senior Professionals Network comprises certified and qualified providers, including in-home care services, senior placement advisors, estate attorneys, insurance specialists, investment consultants, real estate agents, personal finance experts, plus many others. Each member had the opportunity to talk about their service.  As a result, I established six new professional contacts that will enhance my ability to assist others.

The commitment to supporting our aging population is built on empathy, patience, and understanding. Many individuals working in this sector have drawn upon personal experiences within their own families, which fosters a genuine desire to share insights for the benefit of others.

It is noteworthy that an estimated one in five San Clemente residents is aged 65 or older, a ratio that continues to rise annually. To support this expanding demographic, numerous outstanding organizations are already dedicated to serving our senior community.

A statewide organization with a coalition of Villages that work on enhancing, expanding and transforming the experience of aging for all the members throughout their communities.  The San Clemente chapter has created a connected community of 55+ aged residents who wish to thrive in their homes.  “The Vision of The Village is a Community that thrives well as they age.”  With a new office location in San Clemente welcoming volunteers and residents to come and learn more about member benefits and volunteer opportunities.   The board and staff are brilliant with hard work values.    Services are non-medical, an assortment of social activities, various educational programs, plus a long list of helpful household services all with the focus on aging in place.  The Volunteers are mostly bright spirited retired women who offer their time and expertise to members in need.   A classy group indeed! 

A non-profit established in 1975 to provide programs and resources for Orange County older adults.   Their mission is to promote their vitality and purpose supporting their independence, health and well-being to age well.   Age Well Care Concierge programs include Meals-on-Wheels, non-emergency medical transportation, Senior Center weekly lunch, health, wellness & care management.   Additional support in areas of legal, caregiving needs, health insurance counselling plus connection to a wealth of resources from both City and County programs.  Age Well senior services are operated in San Clemente from the Dorothy Visser Senior Center.  

The Dorothy Visser Senior Center, run by Age Well Senior Services, is located at 117 Avenida Victoria, San Clemente, next to the fire station. The spacious facility offers classes, programs, special services, daily lunches, a fitness center, game tables, ping pong, western line dancing on Fridays, and Bingo on Wednesdays, monthly birthday lunches plus chat with a professional.  I suggest picking up a printed copy of Seaside Sounds at the front desk for details on free events and resources. Director Beth Apodaca and her team are available to answer questions and help participants get involved.     
  

Over the past year, I've had the privilege of learning about these three outstanding resources dedicated to supporting our aging community members and hearing inspiring stories about their outreach efforts. This experience encouraged me to conduct a wellness check on homeowners living on the West 100 Block of South El Camino Real. I visited five streets, knocked on twelve doors, shared valuable information, and engaged in meaningful conversations—encouraging these residents to participate.
