“Seniors have beautiful hearts, I know I can help them.”
For Robin Anderson, those words are more than a philosophy – they are the foundation of her San Clemente-based business, Anderson’s In-Home Services, Inc., a company dedicated to providing compassionate, personalized care to the elderly.
Launched over 16 year ago, Anderson’s company offers a full spectrum of non-medical in-home services, including personal care such as bathing, grooming and dressing; meal preparation and nutrition; light housekeeping and laundry; companionship and social engagement; transportation; errands; and assistance with doctor appointments. Caregivers are available on both a live-in and live-out basis and are thoroughly screened through background checks and extensive vetting.
“I don’t want anyone working for my clients who I wouldn’t want in my own home,” Anderson says with conviction. “It’s about finding the right caregiver for the right client. That relationship has to feel safe and natural.”
A Personal Calling
Born and raised in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, New York, Anderson moved to Southern California in 1981. Her mother, Florence Benson, joined her two years later. The two were exceptionally close.
In 2004, Benson passed away at age 78 following emergency surgery, a loss that profoundly changed Anderson’s life.
“I couldn’t go back to work for two months,” Anderson recalls quietly. “It was so hard. My mom had such a beautiful personality. She got along with everyone. When I returned to work, people kept coming up to me to tell me how sweet she was and how sorry they were.” Even now, more than two decades later, the emotion remains close to the surface.
“I still miss her terribly,” she says. “Everything reminded me of her.”
It was through that grief that a new purpose began to take shape.
“My mom’s passing is what first got me thinking about starting an in-home care business,” Anderson explains. “I started seriously exploring it in 2005. I had no idea how much was involved; the regulations, the legal requirements, working with social services. It was a long process.”
But it was one she felt called to complete.
“I was meant to do this,” she says simply.
Restoring Dignity
Today, Anderson says her mission goes beyond assisting with daily tasks.
“The elderly just want to be treated like human beings,” she says. “Our job is to make them feel like they once did, like they are still valued, still worthwhile.”
Sometimes, she notes, it’s the smallest gestures that matter most.
“Something as simple as getting their nails done can mean everything,” she says. “It makes them feel cared for. It makes them feel seen.”
Though she is the one providing care, Anderson says she feels she is receiving something equally meaningful in return.
Giving care provides Anderson with an equal sense of fulfillment. “I feel like I’m connecting back to my mom through this work,” she shares. “When an elderly woman reaches for my hand, I’m there. And in those moments, I feel my mom’s love.”
Her mother’s presence remains constant. A photo of Mom appears on Anderson’s business cards and brochures, a quiet tribute and daily reminder of the inspiration behind the company.
“My mom used to tell me I was going to make a difference,” Anderson says with a soft smile. “She told me that all the time. She was right.”
A Lifetime Commitment
Anderson has no plans to slow down. She sees her business not simply as a career, but as a lifelong mission.
“This is a lifetime business for me,” she says. “It’s a passion. I can’t promise we’ll go into someone’s home and change their entire life –but we will touch their lives from the heart.”
And for Robin Anderson, that makes all the difference.
