ANCIENT WORLD by MJ West

Canvassing the beach

for shells, I find a broad, flat,

  smoky grey stone

It may have broken off a shoal,

and offering no resistance to

 the power of the waves,

 washed up on shore.

A ladder of volcanic striations

cover the surface,

 but, the other side has

small  hollow cavities

embedded with clusters  of

  bleached white shells.

A distant voice of

a roaring sea and bewildering

sounds of an ancient world

emanate from this relic.

Now, It dwells in my

  rock garden,

   a reminder of  nature’s

interchangeable link

 between

the land,  the sea

and me
