Dave Cook's Pro Shop

Mar 06, 2017 11:00AM ● By Don Kindred

Founded in 1966 by Alan Cook
Allan Cook already had 20 years experience when the opportunity arose for him to take over the San Clemente municipal golf shop in 1966. He had served as the head pro at the Glendora Country Club from 1955 - 1966 and prior to that Santa Anita Golf course 1946-1955.
His son Dave worked for his father in a variety of capacities from the golf course maintenance crew to a range picker to the Head Pro. He would eventually take over the Golf Shop in 1981 (where you can still find him working 5-6 days a week.) His sister Linda, has been a PGA Pro at the club since 1991. Vinnie Poncino was moved up to Head Pro in 2016.

The Municipal Golf Course
The city’s original golf course opened in 1930 near the corner of Avenida Magdelena and El Camino Real. The Spanish Colonial clubhouse was torn down in the 1970s when the city sold the property. A new modern Polynesian-style clubhouse and restaurant was built on the site at the time, pretty much where it is today. That Ray McCaslin-built structure was torn down and replaced with the current Spanish Colonial Clubhouse in November of 2007.
