Building Bamboo Garden Structures

Backyard Skills

In this hands-on workshop, learn the basic techniques to design and create your own garden trellis made of natural materials - bamboo and rope! Lucas, a PhD researcher in bamboo structures. Why bamboo? Bamboo is a plant that's said to be "all things to some men and some things to all men." It's lightweight yet strong, beautiful, edible, grows fast and creates habitat, is easy to work, and much more. In this workshop, we'll dive into the world of this incredible plant. Learn how to create bamboo structures including how to scale a trellis model, measure and cut bamboo poles, and tie "faithful node" knots and others. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to create your own handmade trellis for your garden to support plants or lightweight objects. Gain insight into building with bamboo on a larger scale, where we can use it much like a wall, to support bigger climbing vines and espalliered fruit trees, to define an outdoor space, or to build shelter.
