Baja California has a rich tradition of art and storytelling inspired by the peninsula’s lush bi-coastal geography and culturally diverse inhabitants. Three artists explore, with the ‘magic realism’ popularized by contemporary Mexican art and literature, the lifestyle and folklore of this inimitable locale.
The free opening reception includes Baja-inspired cuisine and a performance by local folklórico dancers.
Juan Angel Castillo
Castillo is renowned for his plein air paintings of Baja California’s contrasting environments. His work has been sought after by collectors such as Frank Sinatra and Ringo Star.
Esau Andrade Valencia
Valencia’s brilliant folk-style paintings and illustrations tell popular stories embedded in Baja culture. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the Southwest United States and Mexico.
Benito Ortega Vargas
Vargas’s wood, stone and bronze sculptures blend Greco-Latin and indigenous mythologies. Renowned for their magical quality and technical mastery, his sculptures can be found throughout Mexico.
