Casa Up Close: Prof. Erwin Chemerinsky
What Does Free Speech Mean?
Prof. Erwin Chemerinsky is the founding Dean and Distinguished Professor of Law, and Raymond Pryke Professor of First Amendment Law, at University of California, Irvine. He has been called “most influential person in legal education in the United States” for his efforts to teach the public about constitutional law and how it affects their daily lives. He writes for the Orange County Register and in newspapers across the country. Recently, he co-penned an influential article in the Los Angeles Times about censorship in colleges and universities entitled, “Don’t Mock or Ignore Students’ Lack of Support for Free Speech. Teach Them.” As a distinguished speaker with Casa Romantica’s Casa Up Close series, Chemerinsky will talk about the context of free speech that the U.S. Constitution guarantees, and about the social benefits associated with free speech traditions in our democracy.
