In early spring, most businesses on Ave. Del Mar were dark. Mikii Rathman, owner of Mikii’s on Del Mar, 220-A Ave. Del Mar, had an optimistic attitude during the Coronavirus crisis. She offered a free balloon delivery service in the San Clemente area for anyone needing to celebrate an occasion or to bring cheer while social distancing.
Miki had opened her store last November to an enthusiastic customer base. Having owned and operated a special events business, Neon Carrots Events, for the last ten years, she saw the opportunity to combine both businesses, and this unique shop carries unusual gifts for all ages. A customer can find party supplies, toys, jewelry, and fun products like sparkler birthday candles. There’s even a full balloon bar in the store.
Adding to its uniqueness, Mikii’s includes Neon Carrot Events as a part of the store. One can walk right in and get advice planning birthday parties, holiday parties and large meetings and conferences. And, of course, weddings get the full treatment, which include planning and design services as well as day-of-wedding coordination.

Mikii and her husband, Raul, have lived in San Clemente for 20 years.  “We feel fortunate to be part of the village culture, and to contribute to the fabric of our downtown community. You might say we’re a mom-pop business,” says Mikii.

Raul is a software engineer, who writes software programs for robotic systems. He helps out with the store when he can. Their dog, Ruby, a Terrier mix, is also an integral part of the business.
Raised in Pt. Reyes Station, an agricultural area of Northern California, Mikii could be called a farm girl. She was active in 4-H Club and Future Farmers of America. In fact, the name of her special events business, Neon Carrots Events, is an ode to the family farm. “My dad always said I had neon dreams for the big city.”

When asked if there is anything people might be surprised to know about her, Mikii said, “I joyfully learned through ‘23 and Me’ that I have two older sisters and an older brother. It was a good surprise.”

Mikii and her husband like to travel, and she considers being on the board of San Clemente Pier Pride a hobby. According to her, this worthwhile activity involves fundraising and community awareness to help preserve and protect the pier.

Store hours: 10am- 6pm, 7 days a week. For further information about Mikii’s on Del Mar, visit them on Facebook and Instagram.
