Mariposa in Winter by Don Kindred

Take me down
to the shore, where the gulls fly
Take me down
when the tide is low.

Leave all the humans
at home to their fires,
I just need some time there alone.

At the point they call Mariposa
for the butterfly, fragile and fair,
I just need some time with my feet in the sand
it’s only a moment from here.

Then leave me alone as I wonder
leave me alone as I dare,
Leave me to unknot the hands of my fate
In a peaceful moment of prayer.

Leave me to gaze at the ocean serene
as far as these tired eyes see,
Leave me to be insignificant
allow me, simply to be...

Down at the shore, where the gulls fly
and the sky reflects in the shore
At the point they call Mariposa
To let this free spirit soar.
