CHIEF JOSEPH by Frances Klocke Fullwood

Chief Joseph they say of a broken heart died

While down in the valley his children cried

A whole nation shackled and chained

Forced from their land --

Chief Joseph

The buffalo once like grains of sand

All but disappeared from the face of the land

The smoke of tepees burning

Mothers’ screams and children’s cries

Blood soaks deep into the soil

Murdered and starved

On the plains they died

Of 300 warriors only 80 survived

Chief Joseph they say of a broken heart died

While down in the valley his children cried –

Chief Joseph
