Adventures in Motherhood

Mothers exercise as babies look on.

Being a new mother is a wonderful and exciting adventure. It’s like discovering life all over again, and for me, being able to do it in the same community I grew up in and fell in love with makes it extra special.

But it is also challenging. If you’re anything like me, realizing mid-week that you haven’t brushed your hair since the weekend, or had a conversation that included complete sentences, you may find it refreshing to be in the presence of other young mothers, fellow pioneers new to this crazy world of child-rearing.

Recently I came across a group in San Clemente that has a lot to offer new moms; Stroller Strides. A sea of strollers departs from Tierra Grande and Loma Linda parks every weekday at 9:30am. If losing weight, spending more time outdoors, or making new friends, for yourself and your young children are on your list of New Year’s resolutions than Stroller Strides may be the perfect addition to your routine.

Stroller Strides is a “stroller based fitness program designed for moms with little ones.” The program consists of speed walking, running and strength training that at times incorporates the use of a stroller and can be tailored for lighter or more intense workouts based on preference. Workouts also include strength-training exercises, core workouts and the use of exercise bands for upper body.

When strollers aren’t being used they are corralled together and the kids can attempt to entertain themselves. Some may fuss but it bothers no one, the pressure for a peaceful and quiet child is off. All the women know is that this is their hour, an hour to refuel and take care of themselves so they can in turn take care of their children better when it is over.

Exercise offers more benefits than solely weight-loss or weight-management, exercise produces endorphins and can lower stress, which we all know new moms could profit from. To use the logic of Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde, “Exercise produces endorphins, endorphins make you happy, and happy people just don’t shoot their husbands” (which may or may not have been a temptation on a few occasions post baby). The class may also offer the benefit of more sleep (I hear angels singing), studies show that just 30-60 minutes of sunshine a day can help a child sleep longer and deeper, in turn giving you more rest.

For only $100 for 10 sessions or $60 for an entire month of unlimited sessions Stroller Strides is a low cost fitness regime. Stroller Strides meets at Tierra Grande and Loma Linda parks every morning of the week. You can visit fit4mom.com for more information.
